It symbolizes eternal life and renewal, the light of Christ, hope, joy, and family gathering. Its roots go back to older traditions of evergreen trees, later affirmed in Christianity as a symbol of Jesus, the light of the world, and the Tree of Life.
Trees are set up in squares, towns, villages, and churches, and also inside homes—natural or artificial. In 2005, one of the largest trees in the Middle East was opened in Damascus (Al-Qassaa, George Khoury Square), and in 2006 another was set up in Homs (Al-Mahatta Square).
